Ludovico Baille

Ricchissima d’informazioni, nella cappella della Congregazione del Santissimo Sacramento alla Marina, sul margine meridionale del Vecchio camposanto, è la lapide che chiude il sepolcro del celebre erudito Ludovico Baille, al quale è intitolata una delle più importanti arterie cittadine.

Nato a Cagliari il 3 febbraio 1764, dopo essersi laureato in filosofia e leggi fu accolto nel Collegio dei giurisperiti della Regia Università cittadina. Nel 1786 si trasferì a Torino, come addetto al ministero per la Sardegna, e in quel periodo visitò numerosi archivi, in tutta Italia, alla ricerca di documenti riguardanti la storia isolana. Fu rimpatriato nel 1800 e ancora per lunghi anni lavorò al riordino dell’ingente materiale raccolto. Non gli fu possibile pubblicare una storia sacra e profana della Sardegna, come aveva progettato, ma il suo archivio e la sua ricchissima biblioteca – donati alla Biblioteca Universitaria di Cagliari e messi così a disposizione del pubblico – fornirono le basi a tutti i successivi studiosi della materia.

L’iscrizione che lo ricorda fu dettata, molti anni dopo la sua morte, dal suo antico allievo ed amico, il canonico Giovanni Spano. «Mentre il nostro camposanto abbonda di tanti epitaffi, si nota una scarsezza di essi in onore di quei molti uomini celebri che Cagliari ha visto nascere e morire nel suo seno, tra i quali ho cercato invano un titolo, una memoria qualunque pel grand’uomo ch’egli era Lodovico Baille. Con mia cura, per non lasciare il suo chiaro nome nell’oblivione Mortuorum, si è dunque posto il seguente»:

Nella sua ammirazione per i meriti del grande studioso che lo aveva preceduto, il canonico Spano dimenticò qui di applicare quella “breviloquenza” da lui stesso pretesa in tutti gli altri autori di epigrafi cimiteriali: ma è un’incoerenza, la sua, che può essere facilmente perdonata.

Ludovico Baylle (1764-1839), Historian

Providing a rich source of information, in the chapel of the Congregazione del Santissimo Sacramento alla Marina (Congregation of the Holy Sacrament), on the southern border of the Vecchio camposanto (old cemetery), visitors will find the tombstone of the famous scholar Ludovico Baille, who has given his name to one of the city’s most important streets.

Born in Cagliari on 3 February 1764, after taking a degree in philosophy and law he was accepted into the College of Jurists of the city’s Royal University. In 1786, he moved to Turin, to work in the Ministry for Sardinia. During his time there, he consulted numerous archives throughout Italy, in search of documents on the island’s history. He returned to his homeland in 1800 and for many years afterwards he continued to work on classification of the huge archive he had collected. He was not able to publish a religious and lay history of Sardinia as he had planned, but his archives and his vast library – gifted to the University Library of Cagliari and thus made available to the public – provided a firm base for all the students of this subject who were to follow him.

The inscription which remembers him was dictated many years after his death, by his former pupil and friend, Canon Giovanni Spano. ‘While an abundance of epitaphs can be found in our cemetery, there are but few honouring the many famous men who were born and died in Cagliari. Since among them I have searched in vain for a title, a plaque to the memory of that great man who was Lodovico Baille, I have decided to rescue his name from oblivion and have placed the following inscription:

In his admiration for this great scholar and mentor, Canon Spano forgot here to apply the conciseness which he advocated in other cemetery epigraphs, but we can certainly forgive his inconsistency.
