Pietro Magnini

La rappresentazione storica associata all’elemento allegorico, introdotta nel cimitero di Bonaria da Sisto Gallavotti, nel 1876, con il monumento funebre a Enrico Serpieri, rappresentò un elemento di assoluta novità immediatamente recepito e fatto proprio anche dallo scultore carrarese Giacomo Bonati.

Questi, nello stesso anno, realizzò così il monumento all’industriale Pietro Magnini, un ingegnere comasco venuto in Sardegna per creare impresa, guadagnandosi la stima della cittadinanza cagliaritana. Il Magnini fu ucciso il 27 giugno 1876, assieme al collega ingegnere Ottone De Negri, in un agguato a scopo di rapina nelle campagne di Urzulei, lungo la strada orientale sarda di cui stava seguendo la costruzione.

All’incrocio tra i viali che scompartiscono il Vecchio camposanto, un’edicola neogotica con pinnacoli e guglie, affiancata da due figure angeliche speculari che porgono ghirlande di fiori, racchiude il busto ritratto del defunto. In un bassorilievo posto al centro del basamento l’artista rappresentò l’episodio delittuoso all’origine del monumento: un calesse in primo piano con le due vittime, tirato da un cavallo imbizzarrito, era attorniato da banditi sbucati da cespugli e rocce. L’opera, in cui gli aggressori furono caratterizzati etnicamente venendo effigiati con indosso il costume sardo, suscitò tali polemiche che la famiglia Magnini, d’accordo con lo scultore, ne fece eradere le figure.

Tre distinte iscrizioni, affiancando il riquadro istoriato, ne costituiscono come una solenne e dettagliata didascalia:

Tali sculture di tipologia purista piegate alla descrizione cronachistica, nella cornice neogotica del monumento, offrono per Bonaria uno dei primi esempi di composizione eclettica.

Pietro Magnini (1836-1876), Entrepreneur, monument created by Giacomo Bonati (1876)

The association of a historical representation with an allegorical element, introduced into the cemetery of Bonaria by Sisto Gallavotti, in 1876, with the funeral monument dedicated to Enrico Serpieri, was an absolute novelty, soon followed by sculptor Giacomo Bonati, from Carrara.

In the same year, Bonati created the monument to industrialist Pietro Magnini, an engineer from Como, in northern Italy, who had arrived in Sardinia to set up business, gaining the esteem of the citizens of Cagliari. Magnini was killed on 27 June 1876, together with his colleague engineer Ottone De Negri, in a robbery ambush in the countryside of Urzulei, along the eastern highway of Sardinia, whose construction he was involved in.

At the intersection of the paths subdividing the Vecchio Camposanto (Old Cemetery) a neo-Gothic shrine with pinnacles and spires, flanked by two identical statues of angels, offering flower garlands, houses the bust of the deceased. In a bas-relief set on the base, the artist depicted the criminal event which gave origin to the monument: a carriage in the foreground with the two victims, drawn by a panicking horse, surrounded by the bandits who had appeared from among the rocks and bushes. This work, in which the aggressors were ethnically identified by their Sardinian costumes, gave rise to such an outcry that the Magnini family, in agreement with the sculptor, had those figures removed.

These Purist sculptures depicting the chronicle of an event, within the neo-Gothic setting of the monument, are one of the earliest examples of eclectic composition in the Cemetery.
