Giovanni Marghinotti (1798-1865), Painter
The memorial decorated with a neo-Gothic Lombard band was erected in honour of the painter Giovanni Marghinotti in the first square of the Vecchio Camposanto (Old Cemetery), by his friends. This monument has been tentatively attributed to the marble worker from Carrara Andrea Ugolini (1823-1889). As this artist had been for decades the exponent in the Cemetery of Bonaria of the most rigorous Classicist style, such a change of style would be proof of his capacity to adapt speedily to the evolution of taste. The inscription, by now barely legible, reads:
((BUNCH OF POPPIES))
GIOVANNI MARGHINOTTI
famous painter
loyal of heart and of pure behaviour
he loved his fatherland and was an ornament to it
academician of San Luca and of the Albertina
he received high honours from the courts of Turin and Madrid
favoured by fortune but not by men
he lived neither wealthy nor happy
born in cagliari on 17 January 1798
mourned by all
he died on 20 January 1865
to perpetuate his memory and virtues
above his tomb
his friends
raised this stone
On the other hand, the tombstone erected to the artist by his family is now lost; the text fortunately has been handed down to posterity by Canon Giovanni Spano:
to the affectionate
husband father and brother
don GIOVANNI MARGHINOTTI
excellent citizen
academician of the pantheon of Rome
professor of the Albertina Academy
of fine arts in Turin
painter of his majesty
Knight of the Order of St. Maurice
and of Charles III of Spain
famous and highly-esteemed artist
honour of Italy
born in cagliari on 7 January 1798
deceased in the same city on 20 January 1865
his wife children and siblings
prostrated with grief
As Spano noted, “the inscription dedicated to this outstanding artist by his friends bears a different date of birth from that dedicated to him by his family. But the family must have known more than his friends”. In the 1920s, the Associazione della Stampa searched for his tomb, but discovered that his remains had by then been transferred to the common bone pit.
Born in Cagliari on 7 January 1798, of a coral gatherer from Trapani, Giovanni Marghinotti showed marked artistic talent from his early years. He drew the attention of Marquis Stefano Manca of Villahermosa, who obtained a Royal scholarship for him from Prince Carlo Felice of Savoy, at the time Viceroy of Sardinia, thus enabling Marghinotti to enrol in the art academy.
Thus in 1819 he was in Rome, at the school of the best masters of neo-classic painting. At the same time, he specialised in the reproduction of old paintings, Flemish and of the Italian Seicento, at the time much in demand to decorate homes.
An excellent student, in 1822 he won first prize in the painting class. His growing reputation in the capital’s artistic circles, and the subsequent artistic commissions, allowed him to marry, again in Rome, Felicita Puccini, in 1825. In 1829, again thanks to sponsoring by the Marquis of Villahermosa, he was commissioned by the Cagliari Civic Council to paint the great canvas Homage to King Carlo Felice protector of the fine arts in Sardinia, to decorate the main room of the City Hall: this work, which engaged him for a full year, strengthened his position as the favourite artist of the upper classes in 19th-century Sardinia.
Marghinotti was a faithful interpreter of both royal and religious themes, that is of the association of throne and altar that marked the totalitarian political and social climate in Europe during the Restoration. His style of painting was celebratory, rhetorical and monumental, with clearly-defined design, softened by typically neo-classical colours and shapes.
In 1834 he returned to Cagliari, where he opened a studio of his own. He was commissioned mostly to paint portraits, but he also continued to work for the Savoy court and the Church with his celebratory canvases, on historic and religious subjects, also producing great altarpieces. The Cagliari City Hall houses a number of his important laudatory works, such as the Landing of King Carlo Alberto in Cagliari on 17 April 1841 and episodes from the period in which Gaius Gracchus was quaestor of Sardinia.
In 1842 he was appointed honorary member of the Royal Albertine Academy of Turin and in 1844 member of the Academy of the Virtuosi al Pantheon of Rome. In 1845, he was appointed chamber painter to King Carlo Alberto and as such he was given a Chair at the Academy of Fine Arts of Turin, where he moved with his family the following year.
In this period, he started to incorporate Romantic influences in his painting and to blend the rhetoric of court painting with realism, especially in the expressiveness of his portraits.
He came into contact with the Spanish court, for which he produced a number of works, and in 1854 received the title of Knight of the Order of Don Carlos of Bourbon. Two years later he received a similar recognition from the Savoy Court, which awarded him the title of Knight of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus.
Back again in Cagliari, he resumed his work as portrait painter and for public and church authorities. He turned towards stylistic eclecticism, and largely freed himself of academic conventions, adding to his production landscapes, genre scenes and ethnographic subjects, focusing on folk traditions, depicting men and women in traditional Sardinian costumes, celebrations and folk dances.
Giovanni Marghinotti died, “mourned by all”, in Cagliari on 20 January 1865.
